Born June 2, 1948, to Carl Christian Kipp, Jr. and Marcelle (Moore) Kipp in Austin Texas, both deceased; Carl spent most of his life in Ohio. He attended grade and middle school in Cuyahoga Falls and graduated from Worthington High School in 1966. He studied Mechanical Engineering at both Ohio University and OSU and spent most of his life making things work. Youthful jobs included work as a computer programmer, land surveyor, a service manager for a Honda Dealership and he owned a motorcycle business named CycleTech. His career settled at The Ohio State University where he served for nearly forty years in the various laboratories of Aerospace Engineering, Physics, and the College of Dentistry. He died in Columbus on August 28th. He had an amazingly curious intellect which, in addition to finding how things work, right to the smallest detail, also included a fascination with words and their usages, owning an O.E.D. the size of a suitcase atop a lectern in the middle of his living room. An inveterate punster, he coined a self-descriptive term for this talent called, "derogative infectious speech syndrome." He was physically athletic and agile as well, talents tragically worn away during the last decade of his life as he fought the encroaching disabilities of Parkinson's. He did track and diving in High School. He once taught his little sister to do a guided somersault to the ground by having her stand on his shoulders. He raced cars and motorcycles. Carl was a fierce defender of the weak, an excellent teacher, a fierce critic, a challenger of complacency and a highly moral man. He leaves his partner of the last twenty years, Margaret Farrell, as well as two sisters: Sharon Kipp-Zipperman (Steve) of Arizona and Karen Kipp of California. Family also includes nieces Lauren (Andrew) Gordian and Elan May Rinck as well as Cousins Kyle and Kevin Conn and other Kipp Cousins. His father's family was from Toledo, his mother's from Texas.
